Integrated Problem-Solving: STEM Team Places in Competition

The Visitation team took home first place in two of five categories at Foxcroft School’s annual Expedition K2M: The STEM Summit on Saturday, February 23. The “Mump Menders" team included seniors Mary Claire Kogler, Grace McCarthy, Caroline Magro, and Cecilia Zubler, coached by math teacher Barbara Elliott.

The Summit, specifically designed as a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competition for girls, included five problem-solving challenges in biology, chemistry, logic, physics, and math, all centered around the theme of the day: pandemics and disease.

The Visitation team placed first in both biology and logic. For the biology challenge, students took an unknown sample, stained it, and viewed it under a microscope to identify the bacteria. In logic, they were given information about four people in order to determine the foods they had eaten at which restaurants, and what food-born illnesses had been given to them.

Cecilia '19 said, "I thought it was a fun reintroduction to the sciences that I wasn’t taking this year ... it made me think about how I might incorporate STEM into my college experience next year."

The team placed third overall in the 23-school competition.
