Astronomy Club Explores Earth's Orbit with 1860 Artifact

On October 25, Sr. Joanne Gonter, VHM, met with Astronomy Club members to share an educational artifact from Mount de Chantal, the now-closed Wheeling, WV Visitation school: a small globe that rotates around a small iron sun. The globe, dating from ~1860, shows the inclination of the Earth on different dates; students can then calculate the effect of that tilt on the yearly seasons.

The "Terrestrial Solar Telluric Globe" held some non-astronomical lessons, too. Sr. Joanne, a former chemistry teacher, also pointed out the effect of age on the artifact, including the rust and patina on different parts. She also highlighted the cultural point that the globe referred to parts of 1860 Africa as "unknown."
