Sophomore Vivian Kelly was named the 2022-2023 Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year for the District of Columbia. According a press release from Gatorade, the award recognizes not only athletic excellence but also academic achievement and "exemplary character."
Vivian is the fifth Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year to be chosen from Georgetown Visitation.
The press release from Gatorade listed Vivian's achievements, saying, "The 5-foot-5 sophomore raced to the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association championship this past season with a time of 20:12.3. Kelly also won the Skip Grant Invitational. She finished fifth at the Independent School League championships and took ninth at the Maryland Invitational."
Outside of her athletic endeavors, Vivian is on the staff of the Georgetowner, Visitation's literary magazine, and a member of the Mathletes team. She also "co-launched a public health campaign that partners with doctors from the Ngari Maternity Ward and Medical Center in Bauchi, Nigeria." and "volunteers at local road races, including the Georgetown Half-Marathon."
Erik Boal, editor for DyeState.com, is quoted in the press release about Vivian's growth and improvement as a runner, saying, "Vivian Kelly improved from a third-place finish last fall at the DCSAA Championships to capture her first career title. She also demonstrated tremendous growth at several regular-season invitationals, creating plenty of excitement for her potential in the coming years.”
