Two Cubs Place at Millrose Games in NY

Two Cubs were invited to participate at the Millrose Games in New York earlier this month, a prestigious national event for high school, college, and professional track and field athletes. Coco Murray '26 ran the 600m, while Abby Anstett '27 ran the mile.

"It's been a dream of mine since freshman year to be invited to Millrose, so when I got the email at practice a couple of weeks ago, I was ecstatic," said Coco. "To have the opportunity to race against the best girls in the country, and also compete in the same meet alongside world record holders, was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Abby shared, "It was definitely an amazing experience racing at the 118th Millrose Games this weekend. It’s such a historic race; I could never have imagined myself racing there a few years ago."

Abby and Coco not only had each other as support, but also their coach, Kevin Hughes. "It was really nice," said Abby.

Millrose Games is an invitational with some of the highest-performing athletes participating. "There’s a lot of great talent in the DC area, but stepping on a track with 14 girls that can all race a 4:50 mile or better is so different. It’s very strategic racing," said Abby. "Everyone is jostling for position the first half of the race. I’m grateful for these opportunities as a junior; they will definitely prepare me for college racing and beyond."

Abby placed 11th in her mile race with a time of 4:52; Coco placed 6th in the 600m with a time of 1:30, only two seconds behind the first-place winner.

"My goal going into the meet was to put it all on the line and see where my training could take me. Crossing the line and seeing that I had run a 1:30 was truly an amazing feeling. I knew that I didn’t take this opportunity for granted when I first saw Coach Hughes after the race, and he told me that my time ranks me sixth in the country," said Coco. "If someone told me last year that I would be where I am today, I don’t know if I would’ve believed it, but I couldn’t be happier and more excited to see what else I can accomplish!"

"It was exciting to watch the professional athletes warm up and race," said Abby. "I hope this was the first of many Millrose games for me and that I have the opportunity to return as a senior, college athlete, and, hopefully, a professional someday."

Congratulations, Abby and Coco!
