St. Ann's Center Presents the "Weight They Carry"
Students heard from Sr. Nancy Downing, CND, the CEO of St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth and Families, a local organization that supports mothers and children experiencing homelessness. Sr. Nancy shared stories and an inspirational short film, "In Her Words,” about the challenges young mothers face and how the programs at St. Ann’s provide housing, education, and job support to help these women rebuild their lives.
"We see the face of Christ in each person," Sr. Nancy shared. "We address material, spiritual, social, and emotional supports -- food, childcare, a place to sleep, education in life skills, therapy." She noted that at St. Ann's, young women are recognized for both their role as a mother and for who they are outside of motherhood.
"We're all on our a journey," she said. St. Ann's is "not the destination; it is a stepping stone."
Two student volunteers placed bricks - one by one - into a backpack. Each symbolized a burden a young woman carries into St. Ann's. They were asked to hold the backpack while the short film played.
St. Ann's "removes the burdens that do not define who we are," said Sr. Nancy. Right now, homelessness among families with young children is on the rise; this is especially true for single mothers.
"It was extremely informative and meaningful, and I liked their message," said Ellie '26. "Their demonstration really showed how these women have many more struggles to deal with on top of just homelessness, and they need additional aid and support."
Pope Leo XIV, recalled Sr. Nancy, recently shared that young people are "the promise of hope." "We do not have to carry our burdens alone," she said, observing how the two Visitation students took turns holding the backpack during the film, sharing the burden.
Sr. Nancy will return to campus on November 4 for a second viewing of "In Her Words" and for a community conversation about mothers, homelessness, families, and hope.
