Mr. Luiz Lopez Honored with Dan Kerns Salesian Leadership Award
Facilities team member and carpenter Mr. Luiz Lopez was honored with the Dan Kerns Salesian Leadership Award on Friday, January 24. The award, named for former Head of School Dan Kerns, has been presented annually since 2022 to one or more faculty and/or staff members who have demonstrated remarkable dedication to upholding Salesian values and virtues within the school community. Previous winners include Kenny Purcell, Laurie Collins Quirk ‘74, Amy Devere, and Raynetta Jackson-Clay.
In presenting the award, Mrs. Kati Krueger '99, Director of the St. Jane de Chantal Salesian Center, said, "This award is a tremendous honor and is given to people who have been exemplary in their witness and leadership of Salesian virtues, demonstrating the gentle and humble heart of Christ, and helping others learn how to carry this precious charism from one generation to another."
Lopez came to Visitation at the age of 19 and has stayed for 34 years and counting. A talented carpenter, his handiwork surrounds us, including the wooden crosses hanging in our classrooms, carved from the charred beams of Founders Hall following the 1993 fire. He is hospitable and welcoming, with a smile and kind word for all, especially those whom he has mentored on the facilities team and beyond. A man of great faith, he especially cares for the Sister and shares a special bond with them.
"He is the unseen protector of our campus and steward of this place we hold dear," said Krueger in her remarks. "I am overwhelmed by the gift of his career, his talent, his faith, and his lived witness of Living Jesus to our entire community! Let us pray that he continues to be strengthened by the God who loves him so tenderly."
