Cubs Take to the Stage in Gonzaga’s "Into the Woods"

In mid-March, 13 Visitation students took to the stage of Sheehy Theater with the Gonzaga Dramatic Association in Into the Woods, a musical mash-up of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales (“Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack & the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” and “Cinderella”), woven together with the story of a childless baker, his wife, and the witch who has cursed them with this fate.

The sizable cast was divided into two groups - hope & wish - that performed six shows over two weekends in March. After rehearsing together for months, the performers formed a strong sense of community that spanned grades and schools. Mary Gormly ‘25, who played Little Red Riding Hood in the wish cast shared, “I made so many friends; I met Stone Ridge girls, Gonzaga boys, and other Visi girls. We got so much closer because we spent so much time together.” Megan Gannon ‘23 - the Baker’s Wife in the hope cast - agreed, “I liked the sense of community and getting to enjoy people who you wouldn’t normally meet or spend time with.”

Beyond the sense of camaraderie, there was a sense of shared purpose and joy among the thespians and techies. Reflecting back on her middle school theater experiences, Helena Williams ‘23, who played the Witch in the Hope cast, observed that, “This was my first time being in a show where everyone cared and tried; everyone did their job.” Mary added, “I really felt I could be myself … everyone else was being themselves too and having fun.”
