"Be extremely compassionate, loving and patient with each person,

especially those who are troubled."

- St. Jane de Chantal

Be Kind and Loving

By Kathleen Jakubowski, Algebra and Chemistry Teacher

The fourteen words seamlessly woven in this quotation pack such a profound and wise message; one that surely echoes in our everyday lives. At a young age, my parents instilled in me the significance of the virtues of patience and compassion. Now, as a mother, I strive to consistently teach my own children the importance of patience and compassion through my words and actions, while leaning on our Blessed Mother for guidance.

I often say to my children, "Be kind and loving," or "Was that kind and loving?" This often leads to some kidding among my family due to my frequency of saying those words: "kind and loving." I repeat them because I feel that it is so important that they are ingrained into my children's minds and hearts throughout their lives. I pray that, as time goes on, it will be their voice, not mine, asking them the same question.

Being kind and loving goes hand in hand with being compassionate and patient. Is it easy to always be all of these things at the same time? No, but when you live them out, you make a profound impact on your life and the lives of those with whom you interact every day.

We all encounter more people in a day than we can count: our spouse, children, extended family, friends, co-workers, students, neighbors, clerks at a store, waiters/waitresses, strangers we pass by, and so many more. You may never know the impact that your patience and compassion - as shown in your "kind and loving" actions - may have on another person's day, and even life, especially those who are experiencing trials and tribulations in their lives.

While we may recognize or know some of our neighbors who may be struggling, no one goes around wearing a sign broadcasting the cross they are carrying. It is in these interactions that the word extremely comes to mind. For it is those who are carrying the heavy burden of a cross that need our love, patience, and compassion the most. Words are powerful; words put into action are even more powerful. Whether you carry these fourteen words or the simpler "be kind and loving" in your heart, be the person that through compassion, patience, kindness, and love lifts up those around you, especially those who need it the most.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,

implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;

to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,

but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
