College Counseling Events

Orientation:

Freshman Orientation provides a venue for the newest class to be welcomed into Visitation’s community. Each August, the freshman class spends two days learning about the traditions and expectations of high school life. Students register for classes, tour the campus, meet administrators and teachers, engage in ice breakers, and participate in a mock schedule. In addition, they are oriented to the Library, Computer Lab, Co-Curricular Program, the Honor Code, Kaleidoscope (the diversity group on campus) and the Gold/White Tradition. Activities are led by both teachers and students, including the Peer Educators, members of the rising Sophomore Class, and Student Government representatives.

Sophomore Spectacular:

Each fall, the Sophomore Class comes together for an overnight adventure – The Sophomore Spectacular. The event is designed to continue building on the relationships developed last year and to foster positive class spirit. The sophomores hear from a speaker, engage in team building games, and enjoy the free time of an all night slumber party in the Gym. This tends to be a highlight of the sophomore year and students cite the development of new friendships and a sense of class unity as the best aspects of this event.

Freshman Challenge Day

In October, the Freshman Class embarks on an outdoor challenge day geared towards fostering teamwork, building self-confidence, and encouraging class bonding. Freshman Challenge Day allows students to participate in ropes courses, canoeing, and field games which encourage them to step outside of their comfort zone and engage with new members of their class. Freshman love this activity-filled day and will often reflect on the opportunities to meet other students who they do not have daily classes with as an invaluable part of the experience.

Junior Career Day

The Counseling Department, in collaboration with Alumae Relations, create the opportunity for the junior class to hear from Visitation alumnae who have carved out their career path in the world. Junior Career Day allows students to hear firsthand accounts of the various experiences of women in the workforce by participating in career panels such as Medicine, Law, Business, Education, and the Arts. In addition, the juniors have a chance to participate in a Mock Admissions meeting facilitated by College Admissions Officers as well as a workshop to enhance interview skills in preparation for the college process.

Senior Transition Assembly

The Counseling Department hosts this event each year to help the senior class think about the upcoming transition to college. Representatives from College Student Services as well as recent Visitation graduates come to campus to talk to the senior class about the myriad activities available to them in the college setting. Seniors are given advice about the transition from high school to college and are encouraged to make the most out of their college experience.
