Personal Counseling
The goal of Visitation's personal counseling program is to help each student develop into a successful, well-adjusted, and compassionate young woman who is capable of making thoughtful, wise decisions about her life. Our counselors encourage and support students through both times of triumph and trouble, and are trained to direct students or their families to appropriate professionals, if needed, for help with their academic or personal lives. The counselors also administer AP, PSAT and other standardized tests.
Beginning with Freshman Orientation, the personal counselors provide activities to introduce new students to the traditions and expectations of the school. During her first year, each freshman participates in weekly group sessions focusing on such things as social and academic adjustment, friendships, peer pressures and making responsible choices. Freshmen also complete a unit on learning styles designed to enhance their classroom performance. Quarterly individual meetings with the freshman counselor provide an opportunity to discuss successes and concerns.
During their sophomore year students meet weekly in small groups. Topics covered include increased academic expectations, time management, and strategies for taking standardized tests. Students also begin to explore career choices, a task that is facilitated by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator which provides individual feedback about their interests and preferences, both helpful in exploring college majors and career paths.
The activities and services of the personal counselors and the college counselors complement and enhance one another. Their comprehensive efforts promote student growth and leadership, and facilitate a productive and successful high school career for all students as they prepare for the future.
