Immigrants undoubtedly transformed the United States. Immigrant communities settled much of the country, revolutionized the economy, advocated for democratic norms, defended the United States at home and abroad, formed tight-knit communities, experienced hardship, found joy, built culture, all in the name of creating a better future for themselves and generations after. To understand the History of the United States is to understand the plight of the immigrant. History is best understood from a variety of perspectives, after all there is no one story that encapsulates the United States nor can one adequately synthesize the history of immigration into one moment. Similarly, these stories are not solely “American” as the history of immigrants is not divorced from the homes they left. Each day this course will take students on a journey through the history of a particular region in the world, processing the historical contexts that informed the decisions to leave home and country, witnessing the hardships of the journey, contemplating the successes and failures of settling, and recognizing the contributions immigrant communities have made to the United States we know today. This course has no homework or reading, it only requires an inquisitive and critical mind.

Public speaking is a life-long skill that can be a lot of fun if you approach it from the right perspective. In this class, we'll talk about elements of oral communication, such as speech organization, body language, impromptu speaking, working with visual aids, and how to give appropriate feedback to a speaker. Our goal is to improve your comfort level in front of an audience in a no-pressure environment, while getting to know other Visi students as well.

Description:

Have you ever been to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in downtown Washington, DC?  If you have or have not, this trip is going to be an amazing and educational adventure for each participant who wants to learn about African-American culture. The day will start out at 8 a.m. on Georgetown Visitation's campus for an introduction to the day and then we will use the metro for transportation to the site. Once we arrive at the Museum, each student will have an opportunity to navigate the exhibits from the ground floor up. Students will break for lunch and engage in reflections on-site at the Sweet Home Cafe. After lunch we will continue our tour. Students will return to Visitation by 4 p.m. Please bring your walking shoes, a great appetite to learn, and be prepared to take notes. Description: 

Knowing basic hand sewing techniques allows you to quickly make repairs to your clothing and do small craft projects. Even if you have a sewing machine, there are times that hand sewing is better to give you the best and most convenient  results you want. Learn about hand-sewn stitches, how to sew them, and which technique works best for different purposes. Participants will learn how to hem, sew buttons and a variety of stitching techniques to use on their final class project! All materials supplied through the class.

Description:

Short story writer and novelist Flannery O'Connor once said that anyone who has survived his or her life to the age of fifteen has enough material to last a lifetime.  The creative writing - prose class will give you the opportunity to use your writing skills for self-expression.  We will take a look at all the things that interest and fascinate us, and spend our time turning them into prose works of either fiction or non-fiction.  The work you write will be something you can hold onto throughout your four years at Visitation, and look back on at the end to see what you were thinking when you came in, and how you have grown during your four years here.  Look forward to a fun, exciting, and creative time together!

Description:

This is a course for students who would like reinforcement of their reading skills to help them across the curriculum. We will take texts from a variety of sources that are both English materials and materials from other disciplines that will help students build fluency and confidence with grasping meaning. The course would be designed to help students who are non-readers--that is, students who would not normally pick up a book for pleasure--and teach them the variety of subjects and areas of knowledge where reading can enrich their understanding of things they may not have previously understood.

In this course, students will learn strategies for working with different types of historical sources. Throughout the course, students will work closely with both primary and secondary sources to try and unravel historical mysteries. They will learn how to quickly and effectively analyze historical sources in a fun and engaging way, and how to use those sources as evidence. After completing the course, students will be better equipped to critically analyze historical sources and to utilize that information in their written work. There will be no homework for the class.

In this one-week class, students will embark on a journey of self-discovery and well-being as they transition into high school. Through a dynamic combination of mindfulness practices, interactive self-care activities, and open discussions, students will develop essential skills to navigate the challenges of adolescence with resilience and self-awareness. Students will explore the foundations of mindfulness, cultivating present-moment awareness and stress-reduction techniques, while also delving into the importance of self-care routines for maintaining optimal mental health. By fostering a supportive community and providing tools for emotional regulation, this course empowers incoming freshmen to build a strong foundation for academic success, personal growth, and a positive high school experience.

Description:

Students will learn the basics of Object Manipulation as seen in circus performances including but not limited to: juggling, devil sticks, diabolo, poi, spinning plates, etc. They will also learn how to take a pie in the face. Students will be learning kinesthetic awareness and proprioceptive skills that are unique to circuses and have multiple crossover applications to sports and other physical activities. Each of these skills also teach persistence, problem solving, and surpassing the fear of failure in their own right.

Description:

Students will learn the basic hand stitches for sewing, mending, and decorative embroidery stitches. They will learn the applications for each kind of stick and when it is most appropriate to use. The basics of mending (ie; sewing buttons, fixing tears and rips, and hemming) will also be taught. While this will have no direct application to any classes, they will be utilizing problem solving skills as well as gaining life skills. There may be homework in the form of "Bring an example of X stitch to talk about tomorrow."

Description:

Pre-Spanish 1 is for incoming freshmen who have not taken Spanish before or who need to boost their confidence in using Spanish before the school year starts. The class aims to give students a strong foundation so that they can begin the year more on par with their Spanish 1 classmates, many of whom will have had considerable exposure to the language before coming to Visi. We will emphasize speaking and listening skills and will cover basic vocabulary from areas such as socializing, school and classroom, home and family, sports and pastimes. There will be no required homework, but the teacher will suggest areas for independent study if a student wishes to do some.

Requirements: Students enrolled in this class must have completed their technology setup and introduction before the course begins. More details to follow.

Dates: One four-week session, June 17 – 28 and July 8 - 19 (No class on June 19, nor the week of July 4)  from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Description:

Pre-Spanish II is meant for students whose placement tests show that their vocabulary, communicative ability, and fluency are very high for Spanish I, but who may lack some particular skills that are expected at the start of level II. The course aims to help students acquire those skills so that they can pass directly into Spanish II when school starts in the fall. A second placement test will be given in class at the end of the four weeks to determine if a student is ready to start level II. There will be no required homework, but the teacher will suggest areas for independent study if a student wishes to do some.
